Temples of Kashi - The Kardameshwar temple

The absence of ancient Hindu structures in Kashi is something I have always lamented about. The shrines are certainly ancient, and that is something that has always attracted me to the city. However, I miss the beauty of the ancient structures that we see at other sites. This feeling is intensified when I see marble and concrete and tiles in temples that once would have been beautifully adorned with evocative sculptures, and worn by the passage of time, touched by the hands of seekers who came before. This time , this desire to see some remnants of an ancient Hindu structure in Kashi came true when I managed to visit the Kardameshwar Temple. The Kardameshwar temple is not one of the main temples in the city. It is part of the temples on the Pancha Kroshi yatra, a pilgrimage which takes one on a circumambulatory tour of the whole city. Navaratri 2010 - Day3

Thinking of what to write during the ten days of Navaratri is rather tough, considering that I see almost the same stuff every year - after all, everyone in my circle keep the same dolls and mostly the same arrangements, except a few, who make some changes...... This time, I have decided to look at individual items from Golus which I liked or found interesting, and highlight them, and hope that I dont keep repeating myself!

Here is the Golu from Shankar's aunt's place. An elderly lady, her enthusiasm is astounding. She manages to keep this huge Golu with scarcely any help from anyone, and in spite of all the exertion, her energy and excitement for every small detail is wonderful!


And here is what, to me, is the most interesting and unusual part of her arrangement -


She apparently found this in the US, and it always occupies this place on the side, where every single person notices it and comments on it! Last year, the pic I took didn't come out well, and so this time, I took a few extra shots, just to make sure I got it! Unusual isn't it? Not everyone would think of using this, and that too, this way!

    I like the chillies and the garlic. So colorful. And it is a good idea to show individual items.

We continued our Gokarna trip by visiting four other Shiva temples in the vicinity, all connected to the same story of Gokarna. The story of Gokarna mentions the Mahabaleshwara Lingam as the one brought from Kailas by Ravana, and kept at this place on the ground by Ganesha. Newasa - Encountering an unique form of Vishnu, and Sant Jnaneshwar

The year was 1290 . A crowd had gathered around a clearing, where broken down pillars marked the presence of an ancient temple, now long gone. Review of Executive Lounges at New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS)

During my recent trip to Uttarakhand , I was faced with a problem I had never encountered before. We were passing through Delhi, but we had hardly any time in the city. On earlier visits when I have had to change trains/flights at Delhi, I have always arrived in the morning and left again at night, visiting relatives in between. This time, I was arriving in the city at night, and leaving again early in the morning. There was hardly any time to visit people. I would only have a couple of hours with them before I’d have to leave again.
